3 Holiday Stress Tips by: Tamme Buckner

Stress and holidays usually go hand in hand. Actually the truth is stress really isn’t an option for most of us anymore in this modern world with cell phones and life demands constantly calling for our attention. So how do we cope with stress? How do we create less struggle or alleviate it all together?

Here are 3 simple ways to help navigate your way.

  1. Try shaking your entire body – every limb – and then shake some more. Yes, shaking! Did you know that when animals in the wild are threatened (stressed) that they seek and find shelter? Once they are safe, their pelts will literally shake and twitch. This is their body’s natural way of recovering from a stressful event and achieving homeostasis – harmony in the body. As humans we never do this. We get stressed in the car, office, meeting, dinner, etc. and we sit in it. Next time you get a big ol’ jolt of stress try “shaking it out,” really shaking, crazy shaking, and see if you don’t feel better. Try it!
  2. Next thing is to B R E A T H E… big, deep belly breaths. Focus on when you first detect your breath. Focus on the length and depth of your inhales and exhales. Increase the length of your inhales and exhales. Do this for minimum of 5 minutes and again see if you don’t feel better!
  3. And third, learn how to take in the good. Did you know that your brain is wired to see and recognize 5 times more perceived negative than positive? That’s some hefty odds of biology we are up against. Lesson here is that we have to LOOK for the good. We have to FIND the good. We have to CREATE the good. Take as many moments as you can each day to soak in the good you see.

So there you have it: 3 simple ways to help navigate the roller coaster ride and stress train we hop on and off of so many times a day most of us lose count. Happy Holidays and here’s to ease and grace along your path and journey!
